How Your Starter System Works

Your starter system is made up of many components, but the three main ones are the battery, alternator, and the starter. Each of these parts depends on the others to function correctly. If one stops working, the vehicle may not start. For instance, the alternator needs the battery to give it the necessary charge to keep the vehicle running and power other components, such as the radio, headlights, and AC. The alternator provides the required charge to the starter, so that it functions when you turn the key.

The Most Common Problem

Your battery is the most common problem when the engine won’t start. It may mean you left a light or other electrical component on when you shut off the engine. Another issue is that your battery may have reached the end of its life. Most batteries are designed to last between three and seven years. As they get close to their expiration date, you can start having issues. Replacing the worn-out battery will take care of the problem and get you back on the road.

Another possible issue with your battery is the battery terminals. The terminals attach the battery to the vehicle. If the connection isn’t secure, it can prevent the battery from getting the power it needs to turn on the ignition. The terminals may be loose, which just means they need to be tightened. There may be corrosion around where the terminals connect, which can prevent the battery from working. You can use a wire brush to remove the corrosion and reconnect the terminals. The battery should start the engine with no problem.

When It’s Not the Battery’s Fault

Sometimes, the problem isn’t with the battery. Or at least it’s not the main culprit. When the alternator fails, it can cause the battery to die. Other components or wiring can also prevent the engine from starting even if you have a healthy battery. The only way to know what’s causing your engine not to start is to have the battery tested. Our service technicians will use a voltmeter to test the life and charge of the battery. If it needs charged, we’ll charge it and see if it holds a charge. If we determine that another part is preventing the battery from holding a charge, we’ll diagnose the problem. We provide a written estimate for any work we recommend, so you know how to proceed.
