What Does EV Really Mean?

When evaluating new vehicles, you will see many that are classified as an EV, or electric vehicle. Both Toyota and Hyundai offer several selections that function using motors that are wholly powered by batteries. There are no combustion engines in EVs, so all you need to do is plug them in to recharge the batteries, which can provide a range of 300 miles or more, depending on the vehicle and driving conditions. There are also three variations of charging for these vehicles, ranging from a standard plug setup using a 110V outlet to commercial fast-charge stations that are similar to a gas station for a traditional combustion car. You pull in and plug in. The vehicle and level of the battery’s current charge will impact the time needed to reach a full charge and maximum range for the EV.

What Are Hybrids?

A hybrid vehicle combines a traditional combustion engine with an electric motor and a battery to achieve added efficiency. The electric motor is powered by the batteries that store energy from regenerative braking. Hybrid vehicles do not have a plug that allows the batteries to be fully charged from an external source, like the charging stations used by EVs. However, the power stored in the batteries from using the gas-powered motor extends the vehicle’s range further than what would typically be delivered from a gas engine alone. The process of expanding the range also increases the fuel economy and reduces emissions compared to a traditional gas-powered vehicle.

What Is A PHEV?

When you see the acronym PHEV, it refers to a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that combines a combustion engine with an electric motor and batteries, which can be charged using an external charging station. These vehicles will operate in all-electric mode until the battery power is depleted, and can then be switched to hybrid mode, which uses both the engine and electric motor. Finally, the vehicle can be fully functional using only the gas engine. This wide range of power sources enables PHEVs to offer a significant range, as well as confidence for drivers new to relying solely on batteries and an electric motor for their transportation needs.
